Fall seems to be the fan-favorite season–for football fanatics, those counting down to sweater weather, and the many whose blood type is “pumpkin spice.” With all the excitement surrounding the turn from summer to fall, the conversation of what to put on a seasonal bucket list is top-of-mind. For me, this starts with painting and decorating pumpkins, visiting an apple orchard, hosting a fall-flavored cocktail party, going to football games, and always includes spending many slow evenings cozied up at home. There are a few steps I take in setting the mindset to “autumn.” I consider what I want my warmer wardrobe to consist of, I plan and send out invitations for fall functions, and I brainstorm ways to decorate that are easy to take down when it’s time to transition to winter mode.

Transitional Fall Outfits
I spent a few hours at Goodwill this week looking for some new pieces to style this fall. I always start in the pants section, move to the blouses, glance at the shoes, and do a quick flip through the intimates and pajamas. Most recently, I found a $6 pair of ankle-wrap ballet flats. This is a trend I’ve watched grow on social media over the past couple months. Also, two pairs of tag-still-on pants for $4 dollars each that look great paired with a pair of cozy white socks and Birkenstocks. Lastly, I found a fun sparkly Christmas sweater that will be a fun to style for a holiday party in December.
Some other staples in my closet:
-White + Black long sleeves for layering
-Cowgirl boots
-Hokas for fall walks
-White Sneakers
-Straight leg jeans
-Black wide-leg pants
-Above-the-knee black skirt
A few accessories:
-A scarf to either tie around the neck or head. Chunkier scarfs are also great as a shawl or chilly-weather wrap.
-Purse: I prefer a bigger purse so I can keep some of my go-to items close. Such as: a makeup bag, bottle of water, hand and face wipes, snacks, $$$, journal, and book. My friends joke that if they forget something, even quite random items, chances are high that ill have it in my bottomless bag.
-Fuzzy ear warmers or a patterned pair of gloves to add a pop of texture to an outfit.
Fuss-Free Ways to Decorate
Pumpkins…everywhere. My favorite ones are normally the last ones left—often with a smooshed side or imaginary stem.
Cinnamon sticks. These add a wonderful scent to the home as well as beautiful decoration in mason jars or used to stir in hot cocoa or moscow mules.
String lights in the yard. This is a must for every season—but I love some extra up-lighting around the house in the fall season since the sun sets so much earlier. This proves to be extra inviting when arriving home after dark.
Something new is trending on the cozy side of Pinterest this season: CottageCore. According to GoodHousekeeping, “cottagecore embraces the charm of the English countryside, creating an idealized representation of farm life — no matter where in the world you may live.”
Taking time to create a seasonal style for Autumn will make anyone’s wardrobe stand out, home feel more inviting, and everyone’s friends and family show up for meal time. Maybe CottageCore is a new way to say “Hello to all things fall.”
