Fun Toppings
- Hemp, Pumpkin, and Sunflower seeds for added protein and crunch
- Drizzle of honey and a pinch of sea salt yield extra flavor and can help to regulate your blood sugar levels as well
- Crumbed-up rice cake for added carbohydrates for quick energy and volume
- Healthy cookie or granola (recipe here in the “3 Easy to Make Wellness Recipes for a Balanced Diet” Blog Post)
- Tablespoon of chopped almonds, pecans, walnuts, or pistachios (any nut will do). Nuts provide protein and healthy fats, which can help stabilize your blood sugar levels and provide a full feeling–for a longer period of time. More on the benefits of protein below.
Protein in the House
Here’s the truth—most adults, especially women, are not getting enough protein ((most need 50-60 grams per day)). Vital Proteins is my favorite powdered protein right now. When I know I am short of meeting the recommended protein intake for the day, I like to use Vital Proteins protein powder or collagen blend. Vital Proteins is my preferred option because, unlike many other protein powers that have fillers and added gums, that act as thickening agents, such as Xanthan gum. Gums often result in stomach discomfort, increased gas in the intestines, etc.
Protein is an essential nutrient that our bodies need for a variety of functions:
- Build and repair tissues: Protein is the main building block of our muscles, bones, skin, hair, and nails. It helps to repair and maintain these tissues, which is especially important during growth and development.
- Enzymes and hormones: Many enzymes and hormones in our bodies are made of protein, and they play a crucial role in regulating various processes like metabolism, digestion, and immune function.
- Energy source: While carbohydrates and fats are our body’s primary sources of energy, protein can also be broken down into glucose and used for fuel when other sources are limited.
- Immune function: Antibodies, which help our immune system fight off infections and diseases, are made of protein.
- Transport and storage: Some proteins are involved in transporting molecules throughout our bodies, while others help to store important nutrients like iron and oxygen.
Our bodies cannot produce all the necessary amino acids, the building blocks of protein, on their own, so we need to consume protein through our diets to ensure we get all the essential amino acids we need.
I love finding fun ways to incorporate more protein into my smoothies and snacks and these recipes are:
- easy to meal-prep ahead of time
- great for hitting daily protein intake goals
conclusion
Smoothies are a great quick, easy, and accessible option for busy days. The Sun Kissed for the Tropics, Boost Me Up Blueberry, and Mystery Green Mermaid are delicious energy boosting options for a quick snack or meal. 🥥🫐🥝
